The Kaikoura Peninsula remains mostly farming land. There is a walking path around the peninsula that offers some nice views as it winds through multiple paddocks. At low tide you can walk down below the cliffs where seals lay out on rocks sunbathing.
The seals congregate in two main areas. One hosts the non-breeding and the other the breeding seals. The non-breeding seals are more docile and almost seem domesticated, you can walk right up to them. The breeding seals are a bit more skittish and number in the thousands.
